Foundation Highclere
Castle Senetjer
History is a commonly explored theme for the Foundation Cigar Company, and their new release Foundation Highclere Castle Senetjer cigars draw their inspiration from the ancient Egyptians. More specifically, Foundation Highclere Castle Senetjer commemorates the 100th anniversary of the uncovering of the tomb of the famous Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun, also known as King Tut.
King Tut’s tomb was discovered in 1922 by the archeologist Howard Carter and George Herbert, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon who called the Highclere Castle his home. Unlike many ancient Egyptian tombs that were raided and pillaged over the millennia, King Tut’s tomb was untouched for over 3,000 years and revealed a wealth of artefacts and knowledge about the ancient Egyptians.
Among the treasures found in King Tut’s tomb was incense, which translates to the ancient Egyptian language to “Senetjer,” or “that which makes holy.” Back in those ancient days, incense was more precious than gold and was a luxury saved only for the most special of occasions. To capture that reverence for incense, Foundation held nothing back to capture the ornateness and luxury of ancient Egypt’s pharaohs.
After just one look at the sarcophagus-style box that Highclere Castle Senetjer comes in, I knew I was in for something exceptionally good. The box is intricately designed with gold highlights over a black lacquer background with “Highclere Castle” translated into hieroglyphics depicted in the gold highlights. Inside the box rests 12 6.75x52 perfecto cigars, the lone size of the Highclere Castle Senetjer.
As if the packaging was not enough to wow me, the cigars are also clearly top-shelf. They wear a beautiful Ecuadorian Habano wrapper over a hearty Brazilian Mata Fina binder and a secret blend of perfectly aged long fillers. My palate is provided with a rich and aromatic smoke brimming with notes of sweet spices, leather, chocolate, espresso, cedar, and tobacco sweetness that transform with each puff.
Since these gems were hand rolled at Tabacalera A.J. Fernandez in Nicaragua, each cigar burned flawlessly, and the draw was spot on. As an aficionado with a taste for top-notch smokes, these gems were a welcome addition to my humidor and the box will be proudly on display in my study.
