Hoyo de Monterrey
Oscuro
A recognizable Cuban-heritage brand crafted in Honduras, Hoyo de Monterrey has a long-standing reputation for excellence and is beloved by the cigar community for infamously rich, strong and creamy profiles, opulent in presentation and accessible in price. These attributes are credited to its far-reaching stature since the true start of its legacy in the mid-1960s, appealing to audiences who appreciate fine Honduran cigar craftmanship. Twenty years post a thirteen-year-old Don José Gener y Batet emigrated to Cuba from Spain in 1831 working on his uncle’s plantation, Gener would open his very own factory producing his own cigar line in Havana. Using the profits, he then acquired a tobacco farm located on a river’s edge in the Vuelta Abajo region of Cuba, a fertile plantation Basin of Monterrey, bought in 1860 for which the brand was named. Hoyo de Monterrey, directly translating to the hole of Monterrey, refers to the terrain, concave in nature, which is highly favored by growers of premium tobacco. The line was officially registered in 1865 by Gener and since, Hoyo de Monterrey has been a heavyweight when it comes to capturing the essence of Cuban cigars.Over the years, in response to demands from the cigar community, the brand has reached an elite status, highly distinguishable from its counterparts. Dedicated to the desires of modern smokers and with an innovative mindset, the Hoyo is continuously adapting, keeping up with the times and the seemingly never-ending market trends. Their approach, however, is different from the other brands on the market. Hoyo doesn’t go the gimmicky route, rather focusing on experimenting with true cigar artistry and craftmanship. A simultaneous release by Hoyo Summer 2024, fans can look forward to not only the Hoyo de Monterrey Oscuro, an obscure and more abstruse blend, but also the debut of its sister, Hoyo de Monterrey Rojo made distinct by its brick-red colored Honduran Jamastran wrapper. A reemergence of sorts, the Oscuro signifies the start of a new journey for the illustrious brand revitalized by new ownership, General Cigar Co. Meticulously made, the Oscuro line is meant to cater to its loyal fanbase while appealing to the contemporary masses in the cigar community, without forgoing the brands well-established integrity when it comes to quality, expertise, and the attainable price point everyday enthusiasts have come accustomed to. Said by Senior Brand Manager Ed Lahmann, “The launch of these blends represents more than just new cigars. They are about honoring the brand’s deep-seated foundation in Honduras. As one of the first Cuban ex-pat brands available in the US, Hoyo de Monterrey laid the foundation for Honduran cigarmaking nearly 60 years ago and has become a living legend in the world of premium cigars. With the launch of ‘Rojo’ and ‘Oscuro,’ the brand’s journey is reflected in its commitment to balancing traditional Honduran craftsmanship against the handmade cigar category’s ever-changing tides.”Exclusively produced out of the Honduran American Tobacco S.A. factory, both blends, Rojo and Oscuro, spotlight Honduran tobaccos and expertise, formatted in the brands top-selling sizes and priced competitively. The Oscuro features a specialty blended core comprised of filler from three different nations Honduras, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic lending intrigue and heightening the complexity of the smoke. Following is the most famous Sumatra tobacco, an Ecuadorian Sumatra leaf as the binder tempering its core. Finally, a rare occurrence in the cigar world, and the first instance for the brand, a Brazilian Mata Fina Oscuro leaf is utilized as the wrapper. For although its flavor profile is incredible, it’s almost always used as a binder because visually, it is a bit rough around the edges. Somehow however, Hoyo was able to get access to large bundles of the fine tobacco that was par with their standards when it comes to appearance. Du
