L'Atelier Cigars

Coming from the creative mind of Pete Johnson of the popular Tatuaje brand along with his brother and a couple cigar aficionado friends, L’Atelier Cigars belong in any cigar connoisseur’s humidor. I am always on the lookout for boutique cigar brands that do things different and experiment, and I started that search for boutique, unusual blends after first encountering L’Atelier Cigars.

Founded in 2012 following immense success with the Tatuaje brand, L’Atelier Cigars is where Pete Johnson gets to experiment with rare tobaccos and experimental blends. Meaning “the workshop” in French, L’Atelier is the perfect name for brand. Like Tatuaje, everything in L’Atelier Cigars’ portfolio is made by hand at the famous My Father Cigars S.A. in Nicaragua.

The first release from L’Atelier Cigars is the eponymous L’Atelier. Laid over aged Nicaraguan long filler and binder tobaccos from the Garcia family of My Father Cigars is a top-shelf and incredibly rare wrapper called Sancti Spiritus. This top-shelf leaf is grown on the cloudy mountains of Ecuador and is a hybrid between Criollo and Pelo de Oro. Complex medium-full bodied flavors of spice, leather, cinnamon, earth, cocoa, and dried fruit.

The experimentation goes into overdrive with Surrogates by L’Atelier cigars. Surrogates is made up of three blends with distinct top-quality wrappers, an Ecuadorian Habano, Connecticut Broadleaf, or San Andres Mexican. All are medium-full bodied and supported by a core of aged Nicaraguan binder and long filler leaf, however they offer different flavor profiles depending on the blend. Be sure to try them all!

My personal favorite from L’Atelier Cigars has got to be La Mission. This opulent blend of Nicaraguan long fillers, Nicaraguan binder, and a dusky San Andres Mexican wrapper is arguably one of the best San Andres blends around. It provides an exceptionally smooth yet incredibly rich medium-bodied smoke brimming with complex flavors of dark chocolate, leather, peppery spice, caramel, roasted nuts, earth, and tobacco sweetness.
